Celebrating the start of fall means making all the delicious soups you can think of. When planning your next meal, add this Philly Cheese Steak Soup Bread Bowl to your list. The classic cheese steak sandwich served up as a rich and creamy soup in a bread bowl.
Ingredients:
- For the Soup:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 lb thinly sliced beef steak (ribeye or sirloin)
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded (or a blend of provolone and American cheese)
- 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (optional, for thickening)
- For the Bread Bowls:
- 4 large sourdough bread bowls
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- Garlic powder (optional)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Steak: In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the sliced steak and cook until browned. Remove the steak from the pot and set aside.
- Sauté Vegetables: In the same pot, add the remaining olive oil, onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Sauté until the vegetables are tender and slightly caramelized.
- Combine and Simmer: Return the steak to the pot. Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 15-20 minutes.
- Prepare Bread Bowls: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut a circle on the top of each bread bowl and scoop out the center to create a hollow. Brush the inside and outside of each bread bowl with melted butter and sprinkle with a bit of garlic powder if desired. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 minutes or until slightly crispy.
- Thicken Soup (Optional): If you prefer a thicker soup, mix the cornstarch with water and stir into the soup. Cook for another 5 minutes until the soup thickens.
- Add Cheese: Reduce the heat to low. Gradually add the shredded cheese to the soup, stirring constantly until the cheese is melted and the soup is creamy.
- Serve: Pour the hot soup into the prepared bread bowls. Garnish with additional cheese or chopped parsley if desired.
- Enjoy: Serve immediately and enjoy the delicious combination of Philly cheese steak and warm, comforting soup in a crunchy, edible bowl.
