In-N-Out Animal Style Fries (Copycat Recipe)

Everyone talks about how delicious In N Out’s animal style fries are. Unfortunately, not all of us are fortunate to live near one. Thankfully, here is a new copycat recipe that tastes just like the real thing.

Animal-Style French Fries are fried golden brown, topped with melty American Cheese, buttery melted caramelized onions and a signature fry sauce. 

Ingredients:

For the Fries:

  • 4 large Russet potatoes
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Salt to taste

For the Animal Style Topping:

  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fries:
    • Peel the potatoes and cut them into thin strips.
    • Rinse the potato strips in cold water and dry them thoroughly with a towel.
    • Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).
    • Fry the potatoes in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 3-5 minutes per batch.
    • Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt while hot.
  2. Caramelize the Onions:
    • In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat.
    • Add the chopped onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.
  3. Make the Animal Style Sauce:
    • In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, sweet pickle relish, sugar, distilled white vinegar, yellow mustard, and apple cider vinegar until well combined.
  4. Assemble the Animal Style Fries:
    • Place the hot fries on a serving plate.
    • Spread a generous amount of the animal style sauce over the fries.
    • Sprinkle the caramelized onions evenly on top.
    • Cover with shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. Melt the Cheese:
    • Place the plate of fries under a broiler for a few minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly, or microwave briefly.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Animal Style Fries immediately while hot and gooey.
