Classic Chipped Beef on Toast

Chipped beef on toast, often affectionately called “SOS” (a nod to its military origins), is a comforting dish with a rich, creamy texture and savory flavor. This recipe captures the essence of nostalgia with each bite, featuring thinly sliced dried beef in a smooth white sauce that’s traditionally served over toast but can be enjoyed in several other creative ways. It’s a quick and satisfying meal, perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a cozy dinner, and it always hits the spot with its blend of buttery richness and the distinct saltiness of chipped beef.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 jar (2.5 ounces) dried beef, rinsed and sliced into thin strips
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Toast, biscuits, or pasta for serving

Instructions:

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Once melted, stir in the flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly browned.
  2. Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to whisk until smooth and thickened.
  3. Add the sliced chipped beef to the sauce, stirring until heated through. Season with salt and pepper as needed.
  4. Serve hot over toast, biscuits, or pasta.

Optional Additions: Add a sprinkle of paprika, fresh chives, or grated cheese for an extra twist.
