Starting at 8 a.m. ET on September 1, the retailer is selling a limited-edition Chicken Purse designed to look like the hot rotisserie birds that live under the heat lamps in its deli. The bag comes in two “flavors,” Traditional and Lemon Pepper, and it costs $5.97 — the same price as the actual chicken.

That matching price is the whole joke, and also the whole point. Walmart is not pretending this is luxury leather. It is treating the rotisserie chicken like a brand mascot and putting it on a shoulder.

Why a chicken bag, and why now

September is National Chicken Month. Fall is also Walmart’s strongest season for rotisserie sales. The company says roughly one in every 12 shoppers picks one up in a given year, and the product generated more than 15,000 social mentions over the past 12 months.

Kim Tunick, Walmart’s group director of brand experiences and partnerships, framed the drop as a gift to that fandom: the chicken already had a cult following, so the company decided to give it “its own moment” that people can carry instead of eat.

The design also rides a real fashion swing. After years of micro-bags, larger clutches are back for fall, and Walmart is leaning into that silhouette with something that looks, unapologetically, like dinner.

Walmart teased the launch on Instagram with a line that told shoppers everything they needed to know: “It’s not edible, but it is incredible.” Commenters immediately guessed it was a rotisserie purse. They were right.

What you can actually buy

The Chicken Purse itself is $5.97 in both Traditional and Lemon Pepper. Stock is limited and sold while supplies last.

Walmart is also selling mini charms so the bag can be dressed up like a full rotisserie meal:

Traditional Rotisserie Chicken Purse Charm — $5.97

Lemon Pepper Rotisserie Chicken Purse Charm — $5.97

Great Value Louisiana Hot Sauce Charm — $4

Great Value Lemon Pepper Seasoning Charm — $4

The purses and charms go live on SparkShop.com at 8 a.m. ET on September 1. They will also be available in person at the Walmart Welcome Center in Bentonville, Arkansas.

This is not the first time a grocery chicken became a bag

Walmart did not invent the rotisserie-as-accessory idea. Earlier this year, snack brand Chomps launched “Le Chic’ken,” a limited bag modeled on the plastic containers grocery stores use for ready-to-eat birds.

The retailer has also used handbags as viral merch before. Its budget take on the Hermès Birkin — nicknamed the Walmès Wirkin — proved that shoppers will line up for a joke bag if the price is low enough and the reference is obvious.

The Chicken Purse sits in that same lane: cheap, specific, and built to be photographed.

The chicken already had a life beyond dinner

Walmart’s hot rotisserie chicken, typically a 2.25-pound bird sold under the Freshness Guaranteed label, is already a weekly habit for a lot of households. At $5.97, it is dinner, leftovers, soup stock, and sandwiches. The purse just freezes that habit in accessory form.

Whether the bag holds a phone and keys as well as it holds a meme is another question. For $5.97, most people will not care. You can buy the real chicken for the same money, eat it, and still have enough left over for the charm that looks like hot sauce.

Just do not mix them up at the register.

Tom Cruise has spent decades running, flying, fighting, and saving the day on the big screen — but his next movie might be one of the strangest turns of his entire career.

The upcoming film Digger is already getting people talking, and not just because Cruise is in it. This time, he is stepping away from the clean-cut action hero image fans know so well and transforming into a character who looks older, louder, stranger, and a little harder to figure out.

In Digger, Cruise plays Digger Rockwell, a powerful oil tycoon caught in the middle of a disaster that may have been caused by his own actions. The movie is being described as a dark comedy, but the first look suggests something much bigger — and much more chaotic — than a typical Hollywood laugh fest.

The teaser does not give everything away, and that may be the smartest part. Instead of showing a full trailer packed with plot details, it gives fans just enough to wonder what exactly Cruise is doing here. There are flashes of mayhem, a larger-than-life character, and a version of Tom Cruise that feels almost completely removed from his usual movie persona.

That mystery is already working.

For years, Cruise has been known for intense stunts, blockbuster action, and characters who usually seem in control even when everything around them is falling apart. But Digger appears to flip that idea on its head. This character does not look polished. He does not look heroic in the traditional sense. And from what has been shown so far, it is not totally clear if he is trying to save the world, save himself, or convince everyone he is the only person who can fix the mess.

Adding even more curiosity is the director behind the movie. Alejandro G. Iñárritu, known for films like Birdman and The Revenant, is not exactly the first name people would expect for a wild Tom Cruise comedy. That alone makes the project feel unpredictable.

And maybe that is why people are paying attention.

Hollywood has seen plenty of celebrity transformations, but this one feels different. Cruise is not just putting on a costume or changing his hair. The early footage suggests he is playing a character who is bold, strange, dramatic, and possibly ridiculous in the best way. It feels like the kind of role that could either shock audiences or completely change the way people talk about him as an actor.

The big question now is: what kind of movie is Digger really going to be?

Is it a satire about power and ego? A disaster comedy? A redemption story? Or something much darker hiding underneath all the chaos?

For now, Warner Bros. is keeping enough under wraps to make people curious. The full trailer is expected to reveal more, but the first glimpse has already done its job. It has fans asking questions, debating the transformation, and wondering if Tom Cruise may be entering one of the weirdest — and most interesting — eras of his career.

One thing is clear: Digger does not look like the Tom Cruise movie people were expecting.

And that might be exactly why everyone is going to watch.
